On the water

Kayak the fjord

All attractions

Hood Canal is a glacial fjord — long, deep and sheltered — which makes it some of the calmest, most beginner-friendly paddling in Washington. Launch right from your dock at first light and you'll often have the water to yourself.

Best time to go

Mornings are glass-flat before the afternoon breeze picks up. Slack tide is easiest for new paddlers; check the tide chart and aim to launch within an hour of high or low water.

What you'll see

Harbor seals, bald eagles, great blue herons and, if you're lucky, the splash of a river otter. The Olympic Mountains rise straight out of the water to the west — the light on them at sunrise is unforgettable.

Good to know

We can have kayaks or paddleboards delivered to your rental and waiting on the beach. Life vests included. No experience needed for the protected coves near Union.
