Kayaking, fresh oysters, old-growth trails, sunset cruises and more — the best ways to spend your days on Hood Canal.

The hardest part of a Hood Canal trip is deciding how much to do versus how much to simply sit on the dock. Here's our shortlist of the experiences worth building a day around — a mix of water, forest, and local flavor.

On the water

1. Kayak or paddleboard the fjord

The canal is calmest at sunrise, when the water turns to glass and the Olympics reflect off the surface. Paddle straight from your dock and you may share the morning with seals and herons.

2. Take a sunset cruise

Nothing frames the mountains like being out on the water as the light goes gold. Chartered cruises are a favorite for special occasions.

3. Go clamming and oystering at low tide

Check the tide tables, grab a Washington shellfish license, and harvest dinner straight off the beach. Few meals beat oysters you pulled yourself an hour earlier.

In the forest

4. Hike Staircase in Olympic National Park

Old-growth firs, the rushing Skokomish River, and the classic suspension bridge make this one of the most rewarding easy hikes on the peninsula.

5. Climb Mount Ellinor

A steeper challenge with a huge payoff — panoramic views over the canal and, in early summer, a fun glissade down the snowfield.

6. Explore Lake Cushman

Swim, paddle, or just picnic on the shore of this striking reservoir beneath the Olympics.

Taste of Hood Canal

7. Visit Hama Hama Oyster Company

Slurp oysters at the Oyster Saloon or take a bag home to shuck.

8. Tour a local distillery or winery

The peninsula has a growing scene of small producers worth seeking out.

9. Book a private chef or charcuterie board

Let someone else handle dinner on the deck — our concierge arranges it around your stay.

The slow stuff

10. Beachcomb the tideflats

Low tide turns the shoreline into a treasure hunt of shells, crabs, and sea glass.

11. Watch for wildlife

Bald eagles, seals, otters, and the occasional pod of dolphins all call the canal home.

12. Stargaze from the dock

Away from city light, the night sky over the canal is genuinely dark. Bring a blanket.
