The Best Hikes Near Hood Canal

One of the joys of Hood Canal is how quickly saltwater gives way to old-growth forest and alpine ridgelines. The Olympic Mountains rise straight up from the western shore, so world-class hiking is often less than an hour from your dock. Here are our favorites, from gentle to lung-busting.

Easy: Staircase Rapids Loop

About 2 miles, mostly flat. In the Staircase area of Olympic National Park near Lake Cushman, this loop follows the rushing Skokomish River through towering old-growth firs and crosses a photogenic suspension bridge. It's the perfect introduction to the Olympics for all ages.

Easy–Moderate: Lake Cushman Shoreline

Varies. Wander the shore of this striking reservoir beneath the peaks. Great for a swim on a warm day, a picnic, or an easy stroll to stretch your legs after the drive.

Moderate: Dry Creek / Lower Big Quilcene

Several miles, rolling. Quieter forest trails for those who want a real walk without a big climb. Bring water and a map — cell service is thin.

Hard: Mount Ellinor

About 3–6 miles depending on the trailhead, steep. The signature summit hike of the southeast Olympics. The upper trail is a steady climb to a panorama over Hood Canal, Lake Cushman, and rows of peaks. In early summer, a snowfield offers a fun (and famous) glissade back down. Bring traction and check conditions.
